Integrates process technology into the overall control system:
The wide range of tasks in the woodworking industry includes sawmills, the production of wood composite, paper and pulp production and furniture production. These market segments place different demands on the automation technology. In the manufacturing industry, for example, industrial furniture production, there is a need primarily for intelligent, networked systems in addition to high production speeds for economical, resource-efficient production in small lot sizes. In comparison, the control requirements of an industrial sawmill seem less complex. On one hand, operator safety has to be ensured even under harsh environmental conditions while, on the other, efficient, value-adding cutting systems have to be provided. This requires the integration of measurement technology and vision systems into the control platform. Moreover, wood dusts and other emissions necessitate the use of explosion-proof components.
The highest requirements in terms of process monitoring and synchronization have to be met in the area of paper and pulp production, which is subject to stringent environmental requirements and enormous cost pressures, both in terms of raw material consumption and energy efficiency. To fulfil these requirements and survive in the tough, globally competitive arena, operating costs have to be reduced, while availability and efficiency of the plants have to be sustainably and safely enhanced.
PC-based control from Beckhoff is a highly integrated automation platform, which in addition to PLC, visualization and motion control also implements safety and measurement technology, condition monitoring and energy monitoring on one CPU. With the distributed clocks function, the high-speed EtherCAT communication system ensures optimum synchronization of all processes. By integrating process technology based on Ex-certified components and support for the HART communication standard, the two worlds of discrete automation and process technology can be merged seamlessly. Moreover, Beckhoff control components are ideal for use under extremely harsh and corrosive environmental conditions with high temperatures and fine dust emissions.
