PS2000 | Power supplies with EtherCAT

The power supplies with EtherCAT interface combine the powerful power supply units from Beckhoff with the ultra-fast EtherCAT communication standard. Extensive measurement and internal device data can be processed directly by the control through the integration of EtherCAT technology. This enables direct influence on the device via remote access and monitoring of both the DC output range and the AC input range. Device-internal parameter values, status bits and error messages can be read out, configured and reset easily and conveniently via the TwinCAT automation software.

The power supplies are 1-phase devices with an integrated EtherCAT communication level and suitable for applications with output voltages of 24 V or 48 V. Their compact design, paired with their efficiency and reliability, make them an impressive choice every time. Their high efficiency of up to 96.3% is achieved by the optimal layout of the electronics. For the 24 V range, the power supplies are available in both a 10 A and 20 A variant with an output power of 240 W and 480 W respectively. A 10 A variant with 480 W is available for the 48 V range. In addition to inrush current limitation and active harmonic correction (PFC, power factor correction), the power supplies offer a wide-range input suitable for worldwide use on the input side. The output operates according to the UI characteristic curve and switches to the safe hiccup mode in case of overload/short-circuit. An extra-power feature that offers 120% peak power capability is permanently available for the units in the PS2000 series. The peak power capability also facilitates the safe and precise tripping of circuit breakers.

EtherCAT integration for transparent network and plant monitoring

The EtherCAT interface offers access to internal device parameters, particularly measurement data, directly in TwinCAT. A number of important operating parameters, including output current and output voltage, are transferred online and updated at regular intervals. This not only offers a transparent insight into the plant, but also facilitates the resulting implementation of an automated detection feature to establish when certain loads were added, along with other relevant information. In addition to the pre-set data, further voltage, current, and temperature data can be added to the monitoring list to cover factors such as heat development in the device. Basic information about the plant is also collected, including the number of times it has been switched on or the operating hours.

The power supplies also offer the option of 1-phase mains monitoring. The input voltage is used to detect fluctuations, undervoltages, and overvoltages, as well as dips and dropouts. A special feature is the detection of input transients – i.e., high, energy-rich voltage peaks in the system.
The EtherCAT interface also offers a high level of convenience in terms of safety. Error messages, warnings, and status information are transmitted directly to the control. The operating state of the plant can be optimally analyzed and errors can be detected at an early stage. Warning thresholds that can be set in the control – e.g., for overcurrent – allow the conditions for corresponding messages to be defined specifically for the application, and the power supply to be adapted to individual requirements. It is also possible to switch the power supplies remotely via EtherCAT in order to specifically switch off plant sections in the event of a plant shutdown or in the event of a fault. The status of the output voltage can not only be tracked via the EtherCAT data, but can also be displayed via the DC OK LED on the front of the housing.
