Electronic
Cam controllers are still frequently installed to control machines and systems today, even though newer options are available. However, electronic cam controllers are predominantly used. They are implemented in applications where motion sequences have to be synchronized, such as in packaging or printing machines or in woodworking.
Create your electronic cam controller with Beckhoff:
- high-precision with fast position control
- use standard hardware and software components
- flexible number of cams/switching points (digital outputs)
- depending on the application, use standard outputs or XFC outputs
With Beckhoff, you can create an electronic cam controller that functions easily and cost-effectively with existing standard components:
- A compact embedded PC serves as the control platform.
- TwinCAT is used as the control software on the PC. The following function blocks are required: TwinCAT XAR, TF5xxx, XFC.
- The position signal is read out by an EtherCAT Terminal via an encoder input card (EL5xxx) or digitally via fieldbus.
- The cams (digital outputs) are controlled via the EL2258 XFC terminal(s).
The number of encoder inputs and XFC outputs can be expanded as required. Additional I/Os can also be added flexibly. Thanks to TwinCAT's openness, communication with superordinate systems, including those from third-party suppliers, can be executed via all common fieldbuses and IT protocols. The cams are defined via a configuration file that is automatically read in every time the system is restarted, and the cam controller thus configures itself.

CX5100 Embedded PC series
The DIN-rail-mountable, fanless Embedded PCs from the CX5100 series are equipped with Intel Atom® multi-core processors.
EL5xxx | Position measurement
The EL5xxx EtherCAT Terminals are intended for the evaluation of complex signals from absolute and incremental encoders.
XFC
Based on an optimized control and communication architecture, XFC realizes response times of < 100 µs.
